ASHA has had a long-standing commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion at ASHA and recognizes the importance of acknowledging and appropriately responding to cultural and linguistic influences across the discipline. Since 1996, funding has been designated to provide support for the infusion of multiculturalism into clinical, educational, and professional programs as well as the activities of allied/related associations and organizations.
Applicants include clinical and/or school-based speech, language, and hearing programs; university programs; state associations; and allied and related professional organizations. An ASHA member must serve as project director.
Proposals must include one or more of the following dimensions of diversity: age, disability, ethnicity, gender, gender expression, national origin (including language and dialect), race, religion, sex, sexual orientation, or veteran status. There is particular interest in proposals that result in increasing cultural responsiveness, cultural competence, and/or cultural humility on an individual or programmatic level.
To date, projects have focused on the development of tools and resources for the following purposes:
Examples of completed projects can be found on the ASHA website. All funded projects must include a Dissemination Plan and a Replication Plan so that the author's colleagues may also implement the proposed tools and resources, as appropriate.
